Buddha Siddhartha Gautama was a spiritual teacher and the founder of Buddhism in ancient India. Historians date his lifetime to have approximated the years 563 BCE to 483 BCE. His teachings were originally passed down through oral traditions and centuries later in historical writings of Buddhist texts. The religion of Buddhism and the teachings of the Buddha are practiced in a wide variety of cultures and countries: India, China, Japan, Tibet, the Middle East, Indonesia, and the West. Within these countries a great diversity of Buddhist practices have evolved.
