The name snail applies to most members of the molluscan class Gastropoda that have coiled or spiral shells. The shells of snails are primarily made up of calcium carbonate. A snail’s shell forms a logarithmic spiral and the proportions of snail and nautilus shells are an example of the appearance of the golden ratio in nature. The golden ratio expresses the relationship that the sum of two quantities is to the larger quantity as the larger is to the smaller.
